Kenny Hill Guitars PERFORMANCE SP Performance Series Classical with Lattice Braced Spruce/Cedar "Double Top" and Solid Rosewood Back and Sides and Soundports

Many leading performers today are playing instruments made with "double top" construction because this rather radical design liberates much more of a string's vibrational energy than conventional designs. With very thin veneers of spruce and/or cedar mounted to a Nomex carbon fiber core forming a uniform sandwich structure, the lightweight double top can bend and flex readily in more directions because the top's deflection aspects are no longer constrained by the strength lines of the wood's longitudinal grain as in a conventional solid top. Internal friction and damping of vibrational energy seem to be minimized by this approach yielding a sound that is especially immediate and firm.

The use of lattice bracing on lightweight tops is common because it also is lightweight, and it provides great strength because its interlaced crisscross design covers a larger surface area than fan braced designs. Moreover, as a unit, the lattice does not seem to have a fixed, single axis of support, so, like the double top, the structure is less restrictive. It provides strength and flexibility - a combination that allows for increased responsiveness and power. Kenny uses both cedar and spruce to form the lattice grid on his Performance model.

The addition of sound ports is also becoming more common on guitars today, and it is easy to understand why. They not only give the player an enhanced aural experience, but they kind of turbocharge the instrument. According to Kenny, "the ports allow more air to move in and out of the body of the guitar. This lets the soundboard vibrate more freely adding volume, openness, clarity, and depth to the sound for the listener."

The combination of the above three design features in this instrument potently serve to enhance the sound of this guitar in a manner that will be disconcerting to the uninitiated - in a good way of course. One's dynamic range will be redefined for sure. And, new notions of timbre and expressiveness likely will be engendered as well, for, an instrument with this much potential is an invigorating resource that can stimulate a players musical imagination and continuously inspire new ideas, new musical beginnings.
