Ruck, Robert: RUCK E.I.CEDAR

(Item ID: RUCK E.I.CEDAR)

Robert Ruck Guitars RUCK E.I.CEDAR Robert Ruck 1997 Classical with East Indian Rosewood and Oregonian Cedar

What is the nature of the Ruck mystique? Why do guitars from this individual, one of the country's most respected master luthiers, garner such special reverence? Is it the wood choices? Is it the build quality? Does the finish type matter? Is there a special, secret design? What does he do to produce guitars that consistently satisfy the demands of the most discriminating professional players?

He once told my wife, Claire, that he simply takes a good design and tries to execute it well. Paul McGill, a very fine builder from Nashville who had some apprenticeship with Ruck, once told me Bob modestly stated that he just tries to build a really good box!

I had a lucky opportunity to order a guitar from him in 2004. I selected only the body size, scale length, and tuner type. I deferred all other decisions to his discretion. He thanked me for my confidence in him, and added earnestly that he would build for me the very best guitar he could. The tone of his reply struck me as humble, yet eager and confident. It seemed like he could not wait to get started on my instrument. It was as if this project afforded him the privilege to continue a lifelong quest to improve and refine an exciting process, and he was prepared to engage immediately. Clearly, the passion was there. I looked forward to a really good box. Three months later, I received a magnificent instrument instead.

Maybe Bob Ruck is the guitar world's equivalent to an internationally renowned Five-Star chef. Similarly, he selects the best available ingredients, assembles them with mastery and a unique intuition for their harmonious relationship, and then provides a visual presentation that is simple, artistic, and inviting. The result of his gifted craftsmanship is a superb sound that is for the sense of hearing akin to the revelation induced by the exquisite flavorful mix of taste and smell of a great chef’s food.

The deeply pleasing succulent sound quality of his guitars seems to have its foundation in the rich, firm, dense bass register - it has a distinctive binding influence which infuses the middle register with more body and lends weight and definition to the intrinsically lyrical trebles. And even though each string can be singly articulated, the vowel quality of each is so beautifully balanced that together they produce a remarkably smooth, blended concord of tone that is enthralling. Overall, the voice of a Ruck guitar is exciting for its power and character and intriguing for its complexity and sophistication making it a delight to experience – a veritable feast for the ears.

This excellent guitar was originally purchased from Bob Ruck by a friend and customer of ours who lives in Chattanooga. Although it was made in 1997, it is in near mint condition. It features East Indian rosewood and Oregonian cedar with a synthetic varnish finish. It has a standard body size with a 650mm scale, cedro neck, ebony fingerboard, 52mm nut, and Gotoh tuners. This fine instrument exhibits all of the outstanding qualities that make a Ruck guitar so desirable – faultless craftsmanship, easy playability, and a wonderful sound. - G.P.

This guitar includes a deluxe archtop hardshell case. (used)
