Gibson LES PAUL CUST 1992 Les Paul Custom in Black with Gold Hardware

This Black Beauty came to us recently from the estate of a player based in Florida. Like most guitars in the collection, the cosmetic condition of this Les Paul definitely bore the signs of regular use in the humid, salty Florida environment. As is our practice, this guitar had to be made its best before it was available for sale, and the first order of business was to improve an existing headstock crack repair. We were satisfied with the structural integrity of the repair and the crack seam was properly smoothed and not evident in terms of feel; however, the appearance of the finish left a little to be desired. Obviously aesthetics take a back seat to function where repairs are concerned, and thus it is easy to envision a scenario where a musician working with a limited budget might opt out of investing in costly finish work. Yet, we felt that this guitar deserved a more seamless look, and so we over-sprayed the finish at the headstock and blended it with the existing finish. Though there is a tape-off footprint surrounding the serial number and “Made in U.S.A” stamps, the end result is a much improved look!

Apart from the headstock repair and finish touch-up, there is still some light belt rash (not extensive, nor through the finish), and there is a healthy dent on the treble side of the guitar on the curve of the lower bout. The guitar is otherwise in very good condition for an instrument that was well used for more than 25 years. Following our thorough disassembly, detailing, and setup, we were very impressed with how much the appearance improved. We did elect to replace the bridge and tailpiece with period parts (as the Florida salt air had done a number on the originals), but the originals are included.

Most importantly, this guitar is in superb playing condition. It has a great neck—both in terms of the continuity of the fingerboard and the overall feel. The ebony fingerboard yields a firm and clear response with a snappiness that one would expect from a harder material. Plugged in, this guitar delivers anything from lush, defined clean tone to crushing, heavy overdrive. In short, this Custom hails from what many consider to be Gibson’s best era of production in the modern era, and it is everything one could ask for in a great Les Paul.

This guitar includes its original archtop hardshell case (the case is in fair, serviceable condition). (used)
