1980 ES Artist with Ebony Finish and Gold Hardware and Moog Active Electronics

The ES Artist has many unusual features, but, unquestionably, its most novel elements are the active electronics designed for it by Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer. In fact, the only conventional control on this guitar is a traditional 3-way selector switch for its two humbucker pickups. Otherwise, this guitar has only a single Master Volume control, not two. And, while it has two Tone controls, they are active, and each works in tandem with three additional tone parameters (compression, brightness, and expansion) that are activated by two-way mini toggle switches. The Tone knobs function to boost or cut the tone parameters and each features a neutral detent and 5 plus and minus positions! The tone system requires a 9 volt battery to power it, and it is housed under the control cover along with the considerable electronics package that Moog ingeniously engineered for this guitar. Happily, the whole system still works.

Other notable features that distinguish this ES Artist include: multi-ply body binding; no f-holes on the soundboard even though it has a semi-hollow body; a brass nut; a TP-6 adjustable tailpiece; a unique headstock inlay; and dot inlays mounted along the top edge of the fingerboard.

Given that it is thirty-six years old, this guitar is in remarkably good cosmetic condition - though it is missing its pickguard. Additionally, because it has an excellent neck, it is exceptionally easy to play, and despite the absence of f-holes, one will be pleased with its attractive acoustic sound. And, as stated above, though it is unconventional, Moog's electronics package has proven to be robust - the system still works! So, if yours is an adventurous spirit, and if, like Robert Moog, you are one who dares to challenge convention, then, you will discover that there is much to like about this guitar.

This guitar includes its original Gibson archtop hardshell case. (used)
