Stonebridge: DS-32-SM

(Item ID: DS-32-SM    Serial#: 38902)

House Brand DS-32-SM 2010 Stonebridge Left-Handed Dreadnought with Mahogany and Spruce

General Description:

Though fairly well-established in the European market, Stonebridge guitars (now branded “Furch”) have begun to attract a lot of attention and acclaim here in the US. The Stonebridge line began in 2004 in the Czech Republic, where they are still located today. The company’s aim was to produce a guitar that was faithful to vintage American designs, while remaining more cost effective and accessible in Europe, where vintage guitars are not only scarce (relative to the US market) but far more costly. Interestingly, and along this line, Stonebridge/Furch was one of the first companies we encountered that strongly embraced torrefaction/thermo-curing (i.e., super-heat treatment to age wood). Subsequently, many of their models have a more pure, dry, and fundamental-focused voicing that one might look for in a classic vintage guitar. Of course, these instruments are not the same as an old Martin or Gibson, and have a voice all their own — we find it to be a balanced and clear voice with some low end umph, but a brighter overall presence.

The DS-32-SM is essentially styled on a classic D-18, featuring a Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides. However, unlike some pre-war replicas, this Stonebridge has tapered X-bracing rather than scalloped, which would be consistent with most Martin dreadnoughts made in 1946 and after. Subsequently, this guitar has a bit more mid-range focus and a tighter low-end, as mentioned above. Even so, the guitar has plenty of power and would be well-suited for the aspiring player, a professional looking for a reliable and durable gigging alternative to their vintage baby, or the collector seeking something just a little bit different….

As noted, this guitar is a left-handed model which provides a nice alternative for a lefty player looking for a high quality dreadnought.
