Taylor Guitars 456CE-SLTD 2014 Spring Limited 456CE Grand Symphony 12-String

General Description

Of all the current manufacturers of acoustic guitars, Taylor is probably due the most credit in the modernization of the 12-string guitar. The combination of Taylor’s signature brilliance and shimmer with their ever-popular slim neck contour is a potent pairing when cooking up a great 12-string that is both sonically rewarding and fun to play. Taylor introduced the Grand Symphony body shape (a.k.a. “The Bold Strummer”) in 2006 and it has since become a staple in their line, being particularly popular for 12-string models. This small jumbo body of sorts was evidently derived by exaggerating the lower bout of a dreadnought and then shifting the waist curve upwards. The result is a large, yet comfortable design, featuring a more bulbous lower bout which produces hefty presence and additional low end response, all without elevating the player’s shoulder as much as a conventional jumbo.

This 456CE was part of the run of Spring Limiteds released in 2014. While mostly consistent with the specs of a current 456CE, these Limiteds were upgraded from their typical 400-Series counterparts in the following ways: gold hardware, abalone dot fingerboard inlays, abalone dot ebony bridge pins, and a full gloss finish. The 400-Series models feature Ovangkol back and sides and a Sitka spruce top, which is an attractive pairing in light of the inherent warmth and complex tone color found in Ovangkol—in many respects, it resembles Indian rosewood’s dark and rich response. In concert with the Grand Symphony body shape, the Sitka/Ovangkol tonewood recipe yields a 12-string that delivers the power, brilliance, and definition that one would hope for in a good 12-string, but also an uncharacteristic warmth and color that tempers the jangle of traditional 12-string voicing. All in all, this 456CE-SLTD is a comfortable and robust 12-string that offers a great deal of dimension in its voice at a very reasonable price point.

Cosmetic Description

By all indications, this guitar saw little use from its original owner. We did note some fret wear upon initial inspection that would suggest that the guitar did get at least some play; however, this fret wear has been addressed in the course of our customary setup and preparation. The only finish wear to report on this guitar is small area of shallow dents near the treble side of the bridge. EXCELLENT+ CONDITION
