Gibson: LES PAUL DELUX

(Item ID: LES PAUL DELUX    Serial#: 82413534)

Gibson LES PAUL DELUX 1983 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top

General Description:

Produced for only sixteen years between 1969 and 1985, the Les Paul Deluxe remains a fairly obscure model in the Les Paul family to this day. Its association with the heavy-handed production of the Norlin era, and its less widely-recognized mini-humbuckers are probably to blame for the unjust snubbing that the Les Paul Deluxe so frequently receives. Yet, a quick survey of '70s rock would demonstrate that many players relied on this guitar, in some cases extensively: Pete Townshend notably used them from 1971-1979, Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy favored one in the first few years of the band, Steve Lukather used one on the first Toto record, and Barry Bailey used one as his primary guitar in the Atlanta Rhythm Section.

What set the Deluxe model apart from other Les Pauls was its inclusion of the Gibson "mini-humbucker". Today, we mostly associate these kinds of pickups with Gibson Firebirds, but the Les Paul Deluxe provided a unique alternative to the traditional Les Paul sound. Whereas most Les Pauls are known for the warm, thick tone that comes from the P.A.F. pickups they famously used, the Deluxe’s mini-humbuckers provide a clearer, snappier tone more akin to a P-90 but without the 60 cycle hum. The sound is still beefy, as one would expect from a Les Paul, but there’s a bite to it that adds an aggressive touch. It’s easy to see why Pete Townshend used them for so long!

Cosmetic Condition:

This guitar shows some play wear, most notably in the form of belt-rash on the back and some minor fretwear. Otherwise, this guitar has been well-maintained and looked after. We rate this guitar as VERY GOOD+ to EXCELLENT condition.
