Fender: REVERB(Item ID: REVERB Serial#: R06212)
1964 Fender Reverb Unit
This is the sound of ‘60s surf music in a box! Originally introduced in 1961, Fender’s vacuum tube-driven spring reverb tank has become iconic thanks to its use by pioneers such as Dick Dale and The Ventures. Though it’s been imitated time and time again, nothing beats the authentic sound of the real thing.
The Fender Reverb unit features 12AT7 preamp tubes, a 6K6 reverb driver tube, a 12AX7 reverb recovery tube, and a diode-type solid-state rectifier. Its controls are simple: a Dwell control for the overall duration of the reverb, a Mixer control to adjust the balance between the dry signal and the reverberated effect, and a Tone control to determine how bright or dark the wet signal sounds. Though the unit dons the appearance of a small amplifier head, it is a supplement to an existing rig, not unlike an effects pedal.
Spring Reverbs are known for their “dripping” wet sound and this unit brings that in a way that you have to hear to believe. Its character is surprisingly bright compared to some other spring reverb sounds you may have heard and that’s where it magic lies. This reverb cuts in a mix exceptionally well, even when set to more modest settings. It doesn’t take a lot of this ‘verb to fill things out but it’s also exceedingly fun to play with the reverb maxed out for a tone as big as a tidal wave!
64-11 on transformer, 64-18 on the pan = 1964
Cosmetically, this Reverb unit is about as clean as one could hope for when it comes to a piece of electronic gear that is approaching 60 years old. The cabinet and grill are nearly immaculate, mostly likely thanks to its nifty retro custom cover. Our friendly neighborhood amp guru Jeff Bakos vetted this Reverb unit, both for original components and to ensure that it was functioning properly. Jeff reports that the some bypass capacitors and power supply caps have been replaced, as well as the original tubes—these are fairly common repairs. Everything else remains totally original and unmolested, though Jeff did clean up some of the solder joints and clean the controls. EXCELLENT+ CONDITION
