360/12 c. 1988 in Fireglo
George Harrison’s much debated, jarring intro chord on “A Hard Day’s Night”. The irresistible glistening jangle of Roger McGuinn’s playing on “Mr. Tambourine Man”. What do they all have in common? They were all played on a Rickenbacker 12 String Electric Guitar. Musicians old enough to remember hearing these examples for the first time, will no doubt recall their “What the heck is that?” reaction. The articulation and tone of this much sought after instrument was widely copied, but as guitarists soon found out, NOTHING sounded quite the same. The proprietary hollow body design and pickups, coupled with the unconventional order reversal of the wound string pairs, all combined for a sound so unique it will probably never be improved upon. Though often referred to as “niche” instruments, the “Ric 12s” made more records simply …better. REM, The Who, The Eagles, Dan Fogelberg as well as numerous country, pop, rock and Americana artists sing their praises, and will for years to come. They just sound wonderful.
The 330/12 differs from the 360 model in that the nut is slightly wider (making first position chords much easier) and there are small differences in the body contours. None of these differences affect the SOUND, however, it is just there.
Cosmetic Condition
For a guitar of its vintage this particular 360/12 is remarkably clean, however it does show some signs of past use. The most noteworthy blemishes are a series of scratches on the back near the binding along most of the lower bout near the butt. Otherwise the only scuffs or scratches are very light and consistent with normal use and playwear, including minor scuffing on the front lower bout near the volume controls, and a small scratch on the front of the headstock. As such, we would consider this guitar to be in EXCELLENT + condition.
