'30s Era Acoustic with Mahogany and Spruce
Waterloo with Ladder Braced Top
The Waterloo is a like a study, a meditation on the nature of simplicity. In this case, the simple nature of the common mail order guitars of the pre-war depression era - in particular, the L-00 sized guitars. These guitars were primitive really, as they were made with common materials using very basic yet solid construction. They were plainly finished, and they produced a sound that was, likewise, unpretentious and uncomplicated. Common folks could afford them, and many of the functional originals from that time are treasured still for the straightforward, honest sound they produce.
Many appreciate that one of Bill Collings' gifts as a guitar builder is his ability to glean and to understand by close observation and inspired intuition the essence of an object of interest and then to re-imagine it. Constructed with exquisite taste and an unerring attention to detail, the Waterloo WL-14 is evidence, yet again, of his exceptional ability in this regard. He has captured and created anew the look, sound, and feel of a unique underclass of vintage guitars, and, at the same time, he has elevated the form because of his excellent skill and superb artistry.
