Concert Jumbo Cedar Koa
Like a delicious dish from a fine chef that one orders over and over again, this specific model Goodall guitar is one that we simply cannot resist! When we first met James Goodall in the early ‘90s, he had at his NAMM exhibit a handful of very fine instruments, but one in particular captured our attention. It was a Concert Jumbo with a gorgeous Koa body and a cedar top with simple maple bindings, and it was breathtaking for its simple, natural, elegant appearance. Thus excited, we now wished to know if it could possibly sound as good as it looked, but one must understand that the background level of noise at a NAMM convention - they even have sound police - makes trying to hear anything of interest in an acoustic guitar's sound an exercise in futility. Generally, one can only judge the quality of the craftsmanship and the playability of an instrument in that hostile environment. Sensing our despair, James knew just what to do. He put the guitar in a case and led us to hallway he had discovered off of the convention floor where it was surprisingly quiet and free of interruptions. We could now sample the guitar's sound, and, likewise, it was as savory and as splendid as its appearance. We now knew we wanted one of this man's guitars - that one! And James obliged.
In the ensuing years, we found that our customers definitely shared our enthusiasm for this Goodall recipe, as it were. Subsequently, we have continually stocked the KCJ with rare deviation in terms of features. As we’ve seen with other manufacturers, the combination of Koa and with a cedar top almost assuredly produces fantastic results! The Koa back and sides provide a mahogany-esque direct and snappy response but with a warmer, more colorful midrange. Meanwhile, the cedar top contributes a sweet and complex tonal palate that comes to life readily, thanks to the inherently softer nature of the wood. When applied to a small jumbo body, the result is a guitar that not only offers depth and body, but clarity and balance—what is essentially a fingerstyle dynamo!
