Palo Escrito Grand Concert Cutaway
The first Goodall guitar we ever sampled - the one that made us fall in love with Goodall guitars was a Grand Concert model. When we first met James Goodall in the early ‘90s, he had at his NAMM exhibit a handful of very fine instruments, but one in particular captured our attention. It was a Grand Concert with a gorgeous maple body and a cedar top with simple koa bindings, and it was breathtaking for its simple, natural, elegant appearance. Thus excited, we now wished to know if it could possibly sound as good as it looked, but one must understand that the background level of noise at a NAMM convention - they even have sound police - makes trying to hear anything of interest in an acoustic guitars’ sound an exercise in futility. Generally, one can only judge the quality of the craftsmanship and the playability of an instrument in that hostile environment. Sensing our despair, James knew just what to do. He put the guitar in a case and led us to hallway he had discovered off of the convention floor where it was surprisingly quiet and free of interruptions. We could now sample the guitar's sound, and it too was as savory and as splendid as its appearance. We were thrilled to discover that the maple back and sides produced a high end that sparkled with great sustain, while the cedar top contributed midrange balance and gave the guitar a richness of tone across the spectrum. Indeed, this unconventional pairing of tonewoods was a revelation, and we now knew we wanted one of this man's guitars - that one! And, thankfully, James obliged.
This Palo Escrito Grand Concert Cutaway is one we always look forward to receiving. Fashioned with a AAA Port Orford Cedar top, the sound sparkles and shines. Indeed, the PEGCC is another example of James’ work at its best, representing not only the evolution of the craft in terms of its construction, but a new standard of refinement in voicing, particularly where fingerstyle applications are concerned. As such, we have consistently observed that one simply cannot escape the thrall of this gorgeous model.
