Reverse Firedbird c. 2001
Perhaps the most misunderstood of Gibson’s offerings, the Firebird was quite a departure from the guitars that the brand was known for. Gibson had experimented prior to the ‘60s with guitars like the Flying V and Explorer that were deemed too radical for the time. So when it came time to create a new guitar shape, Gibson looked to another hobby that many guitarists seem to find themselves enjoying… cars!
The Firebird may look like a “rounded” Explorer but that’s about the only thing the guitars have in common. Most notable is the guitar’s “reverse” appearance, where even the headstock is flipped upside down. The Firebird also features a neck through body construction and banjo-style tuners. But perhaps the signature aspect of the Firebird is its unique humbucking pickup. Often mistaken for Mini-Humbuckers, the Firebird pickup features a snappy brightness that’s more akin to a fat single-coil sound but without the 60-cycle hum found in single-coils.
The Firebird V has endured as perhaps the most popular iteration of this guitar, likely because the dual pickup combination and separated bridge and tailpiece are familiar to most players. As such, this guitar offers the player a perfect match of traditional control with the hot-rod inspired styling and performance.
